Using Transmission Opportunities and Judicious Parameter Selection in Enhancing Real-time Applications over 802.11 Wireless LANs

چکیده

The IEEE 802.11e draft supplement standard provides Quality of Service (QoS) support for real-time applications. This paper focuses on performance evaluation of the 802.11e contention based access mechanism called Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA). It presents a comparative study of the different EDCA parameters selection and their impact on network utilisation and performance. The use of transmission opportunity received little attention in previous simulation studies and contention window size was used as the main differentiation mechanism. Through protocol analysis and simulation study, we demonstrate the advantage of using transmission opportunity in achieving higher network capacity.
